PIERCE TRANSIT INCREASES SERVICE; ADDS NEW ROUTELakewood, WA – Beginning June 7, 2015 Pierce Transit will increase bus service by an additional 12,000 service hours. The additional service will focus primarily on increasing span of service to weekends and increased weekday frequency on several routes. This 3% increase in service is the first major increase in service hours since the Agency cut over 35% in 2011. Pierce Transit’s total amount of service hours now increases to about 443,000 per year, compared to 621,000 at its peak in 2007.
Twenty Pierce Transit routes will see increased span of service on weekends while Routes 402, 500 and Pierce Transit’s new Route 4 will see increased weekday frequency. Specific details for increased weekend service can be found at piercetransit.org/pierce-transit-routes/. Route 402 serves the Meridian corridor from 176th St. E in South Hill to the Federal Way Transit Center via the South Hill Mall Transit Center, Puyallup Sounder Station and the cities of Puyallup, Edgewood and Milton. Route 500 serves as an important local route making connections along HWY 99 from Downtown Tacoma to Federal Way Transit Center via Tacoma Dome Station, Fife, and Milton.
Additionally, Pierce Transit is instituting the new Route 4. Route 4 combines Routes 204 and 410 into one new route for better service between Lakewood, South Hill, and Pierce College-Puyallup, operating on 30 minute weekday frequency. Passengers currently transfer between the two routes at Parkland Transit Center. Combining the two routes into a one seat ride was a natural improvement, saving the rider up to 10 minutes of travel time and making operations more efficient. The project had help from a $1.2 million State Regional Mobility Grant, which transformed the intersection of Pacific Avenue and 112th St. E to allow for bus pullouts and safer connections for our passengers.
